I had a convo with a friend the other day about the ridiculousness of romance movies and how completely they misrepresent real relationships. I think that an alarmingly large number of people–myself included–see them as an escape into fully impossible relationships. At the risk of being self-deprecating, I think there is a level of insecurity at the root of this love of romantic drivel.
We watch these stories unfold and imagine that what the characters on screen experience is fully accessible in our lives (i.e., Mr./Mrs. Right will stumble upon you and after an acceptable amount of fairytale mini-issues, you will fall madly in-love and live happily-ever-after…*fade out*)…except that it doesn’t happen just so, in fact it hardly ever does.
